Declutter Guide/Guides/Building Materials

What do I do with leftover building materials?

Renovation leftovers are Home ReSource's whole reason for existing. Lumber 5 feet or longer, doors, windows, cabinets, sinks, toilets, hardwood flooring, trim, tile — if it's reusable, they want it. Their deconstruction service can also pull usable materials from a whole remodel before demolition.

Step 1 — Best

Reduce

Don’t create the waste in the first place.

  • Measure twice and buy to the nearest standard dimension — a little planning saves a pickup bed of scrap.
  • Ask your contractor to order exact counts instead of the usual 10–15% overage buffer.

Step 2 — Better

Reuse

Give it another life — donate, sell, or repurpose.

  • Home ReSource (1515 Wyoming St) takes lumber 5 ft+, plus doors, windows, cabinets, hardware, lighting, plumbing fixtures.
  • Habitat for Humanity ReStore (East Missoula) takes cabinets, appliances, doors, and furniture.
  • Post leftover paint, tile, or specialty materials on the Missoula Buy Nothing group — local makers snap these up fast.

Step 3 — Good

Recycle

Proper drop-off keeps materials in the economy.

  • Home ReSource offers free drop-off for reusable items during donation hours (check their site for current schedule).
  • For larger jobs, schedule deconstruction with Home ReSource — they'll pull everything reusable before your demo crew arrives.
  • Metal pipes, copper, and scrap: Pacific Steel & Recycling pays by the pound.

Last Resort

Heads up

Asbestos-containing materials (pre-1980 insulation, popcorn ceilings, old floor tile) need a licensed abatement contractor — do not remove yourself.
