What do I do with leftover paint?
Missoula generates thousands of gallons of leftover paint a year, and Home ReSource's PaintCare program is one of the best in the state — drop off latex or oil paint for free, and they resell the good stuff at a fraction of new-can prices. Nothing needs to go to landfill.
Step 1 — Best
Reduce
Don’t create the waste in the first place.
- •Use the paint calculator on the Home ReSource site before you buy — most DIY jobs are massively over-purchased.
- •Store half-used cans upside-down with the lid sealed — no air pocket means paint keeps for years.
Step 2 — Better
Reuse
Give it another life — donate, sell, or repurpose.
- •Home ReSource's PaintCare drop-off: free for latex, oil-based, stains, and primers (most brands).
- •Post on Buy Nothing — someone's always looking for a base coat or a specific color to touch up.
- •Small jobs and touch-ups: save 1 cup of each paint in a labeled glass jar rather than keeping the whole gallon.
Step 3 — Good
Recycle
Proper drop-off keeps materials in the economy.
- •Home ReSource (1515 Wyoming St): the primary drop-off. They'll take full cans, half cans, and empty cans.
- •Dried-out latex paint cans can go in the trash with the lid off — most sanitation haulers accept them dry.
Last Resort
Heads up
Never pour paint down a drain or in the yard. To dry out small amounts of latex, mix with kitty litter or sawdust and let it harden in the can before trashing.
