What do I do with yard and garden waste?
Yard waste is about 13% of the average Missoula trash load, and it all has a better home. Garden City Compost turns it into local soil amendment, backyard composting turns it into free mulch, and most of the woody debris has landscape reuse before it ever needs a hauler.
Step 1 — Best
Reduce
Don’t create the waste in the first place.
- •Mulch-mow your lawn — leave grass clippings in place and you'll cut your fertilizer needs in half.
- •Choose native plants for landscaping — less water, less trimming, less waste.
Step 2 — Better
Reuse
Give it another life — donate, sell, or repurpose.
- •Leaves: rake them into garden beds as free winter mulch.
- •Branches and brush: run through a chipper (rent locally, or check Buy Nothing for a shared neighborhood rental) for garden paths and mulch.
- •Log-rounds 4" and up: firewood, or drop off with local woodworkers on Buy Nothing.
Step 3 — Good
Recycle
Proper drop-off keeps materials in the economy.
- •Garden City Compost (2607 Latimer St): accepts yard waste (leaves, grass, brush) for commercial composting. Check for current drop-off rates.
- •Missoula's seasonal Leaf Fest events (fall) offer free community leaf drop-off.
- •Large tree removal: most arborists dispose of their own debris as part of the job — confirm before hiring.
Last Resort
Heads up
Don't burn yard waste in city limits — it's against Missoula Valley Air Quality rules. Noxious weeds (knapweed, leafy spurge) should be bagged and trashed, NOT composted, to prevent seed spread.
